Symbiosis launches India’s first AI institute within the University

Symbiosis International (Deemed University) has established the Symbiosis Artificial Intelligence Institute (SAII), which it states is the first AI-focused institute housed within an existing Indian university. The new institute is set to begin operations in July 2025 with two undergraduate programs focused on the application of artificial intelligence across academic and professional domains.

New academic programs announced

The Symbiosis Artificial Intelligence Institute will offer a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Artificial Intelligence and a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in Artificial Intelligence. Both programs are designed to integrate AI instruction with sector-specific applications.

The BSc program will offer specialisations in five areas: health sciences, sports sciences, agriculture, data science, and cybersecurity. The BBA program will focus on the use of AI in areas such as financial technologies, marketing, global supply chains, media, and human resource management.

According to the university, the curriculum is structured to combine foundational AI education with applied training relevant to emerging industry demands.

Institutional context

The institute will function under the broader academic framework of Symbiosis International. It is intended to serve as a platform for interdisciplinary AI education, drawing from existing faculty and infrastructure while introducing new courses that reflect current technological shifts.

The initiative is part of a wider movement within Indian higher education institutions to expand offerings related to artificial intelligence. Over the past few years, several public and private universities have introduced AI-oriented degrees, certificates, and research programs.

Broader trends in AI education

The establishment of dedicated AI institutes comes amid a global push to align education with technological change. In India, artificial intelligence has been identified as a key area of focus under various digital and skill development initiatives. As industries incorporate AI into operations and services, academic institutions are developing new programs to meet projected workforce requirements.

While standalone AI courses have been available for several years, full-degree programs specifically focused on artificial intelligence are becoming more common. These programs often combine core technical training with instruction in how AI intersects with sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, business, and public policy.

Timeline and next steps

Symbiosis International plans to begin the first academic session for SAII in mid-2025. Admissions are expected to open in the coming months. The university has not yet announced plans for postgraduate or research-focused programs under the institute.
