OpenAI enables data residency in India, other Asian countries

ChatGPT-maker OpenAIhas introduced data residency support in India, Japan, Singapore, and South Korea for ChatGPT Enterprise, ChatGPT Edu, and its API platform.

The initiative will assist organisations in the above mentioned countries to meet local data sovereignty and compliance requirements when using the firm’s products and building new AI solutions.

This allows eligible API customers and new users to opt for storing their data, such as prompts, files, and conversations, at rest within their region. This also includes all content generated via ChatGPT, including custom GPTs and interactions across text, image, and video.

It added that new ChatGPT workspaces can now be configured with data residency in supported countries, ensuring that enterprise and educational content remains locally stored.

The expansion is part of OpenAI’s growing footprint in Asia, where demand for AI tools has surged. The company noted that it currently supports a wide range of partners across the region, including SoftBank, Kakao, Grab, Singapore Airlines, and others spanning startups, enterprises, and educational institutions.

In India specifically, where OpenAI’s user base tripled over last year, the addition of data residency is a crucial step as the company continues to deepen its presence in one of its fastest-growing markets.

This also comes on the heels of the company rolling out OpenAI for Countries, a new initiative under its $500 billion Stargate project aimed at helping nations build AI infrastructure.

Partner countries can expect support in setting up in-country data centers to ensure data sovereignty and build localised AI applications. Additionally, the initiative includes co-investing in national AI startup funds to spur local innovation, job creation, and economic growth.

“We’ve heard from many countries asking for help in building out similar AI infrastructure—that they want their own Stargates and similar projects. It’s clear to everyone now that this kind of infrastructure is going to be the backbone of future economic growth and national development,” said the company.
