Just watched this clip from What Bitcoin Did with Mechanic and it really stuck with me. He makes a strong point about incentives in Bitcoin. Miners have a built-in feedback mechanism. If mining gets too hard, difficulty adjusts. But node operators have no such support. If running a node becomes too costly or complex, people just stop.
