Node in Home Server Software (e.g. Umbrel or Start9) vs. running Core and other stuff directly on Linux miniPC
I recently bought a mini PC, and waiting for arrival. I'm planning to install Linux on it, and use it to run a node and some home server apps (this is a rabbit hole I've not dug into yet, so I only know about NextCloud). I might also eventually install a Lightning node and start dipping my toes into Lightning and channel management. Now, the question: should I just install the OS of any of the good Bitcoin-friendly home servers (such as Umbrel or Start9), or should I directly install the apps of the respective products (e.g. Bitcoin Core + NextCloud) on my Linux OS? If I do the latter, I guess from a security standpoint, several VMs would be recommended? I guess what I'm really trying to understand is: what is the value-added of Umbrel and Start9, apart from making easy and user-friendly to run a node and/or home server (which of course is a lot)? Am I missing something, like e.g. apps in their marketplace which integrate very nicely with one another, and which I would otherwise not be able to set up? Unrelated question: Bitcoin Core or Knots? submitted by /u/lightbulb-7 [link] [comments]
