Expression, exhibition, engagement: Tips for creative success from gallerist-curator Lisa Pingale

Launched in 2014, PhotoSparks is a weekly feature from YourStory, with photographs that celebrate the spirit of creativity and innovation. In the earlier 860 posts, we featured an art festival, cartoon gallery. world music festivaltelecom expomillets fair, climate change expo, wildlife conference, startup festival, Diwali rangoli, and jazz festival.

Presented by the art platform TheCurators.art, Pune’s Monalisa Kalagram recently showcased the exhibition Contemporary Signatures 4.0. See our coverage of earlier events at this vibrant gallery from 2021 onwards here.

“Indian art has been gaining recognition in the global market, with increasing interest from international collectors and institutions,” Lisa Pingale, founder and owner of Monalisa Kalagram, tells YourStory.

Its profile can be further elevated by initiatives such as participating in global art fairs and hosting international exhibitions. “Fostering collaborations between Indian and international artists can also be beneficial,” she adds.

“Enhancing digital presence through virtual exhibitions and leveraging social media platforms can help reach a wider audience,” Pingale says. She cites the recent auction of an MF Husain artwork for over Rs 118 crore as a testament to the robust nature of the Indian art market.

She is proud of how her art gallery, co-founded with her mother Mona Pingale, has enriched Pune’s cultural landscape by hosting a diverse array of exhibitions and events. “We cater to both established and emerging artists,” she describes.

A notable highlight this year has been the Virasat Karigar Haat, a traditional art, craft, and textile bazaar that took place in January. “This unique craft haat featured 30 master craftsmen, including two Padma awardees and a UNESCO awardee,” Pingale recalls.

The exhibition showcased a rich tapestry of traditional arts such as Phad paintings and Bagru block prints. The bazaar was planned by the artisans themselves, providing visitors with an authentic and immersive cultural experience.

“Such initiatives not only preserve heritage crafts but also create direct engagement between artisans and audiences. They foster deeper appreciation and support for indigenous art forms,” she adds.

Other feathers in the gallery’s cap are the earlier Seed Stories Exhibition which explored the narratives of seed-saving communities and the intersection of agriculture, art and sustainability. The Kalagram Summer Edit brought together a curated selection of art, fashion, and lifestyle products, while other events featured eco-friendly practices and materials.

“Through these diverse and impactful initiatives, Monalisa Kalagram continues to create unforgettable artistic experiences, fostering a vibrant community where art, culture and tradition converge,” Pingale explains.

Over the years, the gallery has collaborated with a range of partners such as Goethe Institute and Alliance de Francaise. “Other stimulating and enriching partners are in the works,” Pingale promises.

Its exhibitions such as Contemporary Signatures have been well-received. “We attracted a range of art enthusiasts and collectors. Such positive receptions inspire galleries to explore new themes, incorporate emerging artists, and experiment with different art forms in future projects,” Pingale enthuses.

She is positioning the gallery as an oasis for cultural enrichment in Pune and beyond. “We aim to foster a community where art in all its forms is celebrated and accessible. The gallery remains committed to supporting artists and engaging audiences through diverse and dynamic programming,” she affirms.

As other favourite festivals in India, she cites the Kochi-Muziris Biennale and the India Art Fair. “They are celebrated for their diverse showcases of contemporary art and interactive programmes,” she says.

One of the recent technology trends that has taken the art world by storm is the rise of artificial intelligence (AI). “AI and Generative AI have introduced new tools for artists, enabling innovative creations and expanding the boundaries of traditional art forms,” Pingale observes.

“Some view AI as a threat due to concerns about authenticity and originality. But others see it as an opportunity to explore new creative avenues and reach broader audiences,” she adds.

As industry trends, Pingale points to the rise in career options in the art world, in addition to being an artist. “There are numerous opportunities as art curators, educators, therapists, conservators, and critics. Gallery management, which includes overseeing the operations of art galleries, is an emerging option as well,” she adds.

She also offers a number of tips for aspiring artists. “Be consistent. Regularly post high-quality images of your artwork,” she suggests.

Artists should also embrace collaboration. “Partner with other artists or influencers to expand your reach. Make use of platform-specific features like stories, reels and live sessions to showcase your work dynamically,” she adds.

“Engagement is key – interact with your audience by responding to comments and messages. Leverage storytelling by sharing the creative process, inspirations and stories behind your artworks,” Pingale signs off.

Now what have you done today to pause in your busy schedule and harness your creative side for a better world?
